New Music / Music Video: Arctic Monkeys, Cornerstone

Song: Cornerstone
Artist: Arctic Monkeys
Album: Humbug
Label: Domino / Warner Bros.
Notes: 2nd single from LP
Analysis: ‘Cornerstone’ has a simple, slowly-strummed sweetness to it that Arctic Monkeys songs don’t usually go for, as far as I know. Here, Alex Turner sings a tune about (or at least what I interpret as) wanting to pretend that every woman he meets is a different woman in particular, and in the end settles for the woman’s sister. It’s the kind of song that I picture will get the crowd of a Monkeys show swaying back and forth and singing grinningly. Continue Reading

New Music / Music Video: Snoop Dogg, Gangsta Luv [ft. The-Dream]

Song: Gangsta Luv [ft. The-Dream]
Artist: Snoop Dogg
Album: Malice in Wonderland
Producer: The-Dream
Label: Priority Records
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: Snoop decided to play it a little bit safer with his latest lead single. Unlike the stripped-out classic ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’, or the auto-tuned disco-flaired weirdness of ‘Sexual Eruption’, ‘Gangsta Luv’ is a more straightforward pop rap dance track. Continue Reading

New Music / Music Video: Frightened Rabbit, Swim Until You Can’t See Land

10.22.09

Song: Swim Until You Can’t See Land
Artist: Frightened Rabbit
Album: The Winter of Mixed Drinks
Label: Fat Cat Records
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’ is a song about abandoning all hope and getting the hell out of dodge before the worst hits the horizon.

Dip a toe in the ocean. Oh how it hardens and it numbs.
And the rest of me is a burgeoned man
built to collapse into crumbs.
And if I hadn’t come down
to the coast to disappear,
I may have died in a land-slide
of the rocks, the hopes and fears.

New Music / Music Video: Death Cab for Cutie, Meet Me On the Equinox

Song: Meet Me on the Equinox
Artist: Death Cab for Cutie
Album: New Moon (OST)
Label: Atlantic Records
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: Death Cab has had a great 2009 thus far. Riding the success of their near-perfect 2008 LP Narrow Stairs, they released two of my favorites from the album: ‘Cath…‘ and ‘Grapevine Fires‘ as singles this year, followed by the equally-superb The Open Door EP followup that further cemented my admiration of this band. ‘Meet Me On the Equinox’ is a track written specifically for the soundtrack to a teen-fad film franchise of the last couple of years; New Moon. Music Video: D-Block, Get That Paper

Song: Get That Paper [ft. S.I.]
Artist: D-Block
Album: No Security
Label: Def Jam
Producer: unknown
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: ‘Get That Paper’ is actually more a LOX song than a D-Block song, but all D-Block is is the LOX with some excess rappers, and I’d rather hear a LOX song anyway. This is one of my favorite hip hop tracks of the spring and the video’s actually not your run of the mill rap video, although all the elements are there. Instead, it’s Jada, Styles P and Sheek Louch (and a Kid Capri cameo) throwing a party to raise funds to not get evicted. It’s even shot kind of hazy to fit with the flow of the song, and I’m digging Styles’ throwback Charlotte Hornets hat on an unrelated note. This song is still on repeat for me though, which is a good sign for the new album.

Music Video: The Killers, The World We Live In

Song: The World We Live In
Artist: The Killers
Album: Day & Age
Label: Island Records
Notes: 3rd single from LP
Analysis: If you weren’t feeling the first two singles (‘Human’ and ‘Spaceman‘) from The Killers’ late 2008 release, you might enjoy ‘The World We Live In’ a little bit more. It’s less house music and more prog rock anthem. The video’s a little too icey for my springtime/summer mood, but it’s shot really nicely and Brandon’s wardrobe is only slightly less outrageous than previous videos. It’s as close to Hot Fuss as the album gets, which is the best compliment that I can give a Killers song lately.

Music Video: Modest Mouse, Satellite Skin

Song: Satellite Skin
Artist: Modest Mouse
Album: No One’s First And You’re Next EP
Label: Epic Records
Notes: 1st single from EP
Analysis: Modest Mouse is one of the most important bands in of my generation for me. Back in early 2004 when Good News for People Who Love Bad News came out, they really cracked my taste in music wide open. Before I heard that album I was mainly big into the emo/post-hardcore genre, as well as alternative metal & popular hip hop stuff. But Modest Mouse really introduced me to a lot more sounds and types of music, which happened perfectly right before I went away to college, which was also obviously a huge turning point in my life. Not to get all sentimental, but to this day that album is one of my most played favorites, and I’ve since caught up greatly on the group’s influences, influencees, and learned to love so many new bands and genres in a way that I never could have had I not been given a copy of their cd in 2004. With that out of the way, ‘Satellite Skin’ is a new Modest Mouse track off of their upcoming EP of unreleased joints from the Good News sessions, as well as the We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank b-sides. The sunny, crunchy tune has a bizarrely cool video to go along with it featuring walking birdhouses, alien cults and a disgusting patch of pulsating hairy flesh. You have to wonder how Tool music video animator Kevin Willis could even think up an idea for a storyline this odd, but Modest Mouse is a very imaginative band also so I’m sure they had something to do with it.

Music Video: Little Joy, Next Time Around

Filed under: Download, Indie Pop, Music Video — Tags: — Greg @ 7:36 pm

05.14.09

Song: Next Time Around
Artist: Little Joy
Album: Little Joy
Label: Rough Trade Records
Notes: 2nd single from LP
Analysis: For those who don’t know, Little Joy is the side project of The Strokes’ drummer, Fabrizio Moretti. There’s more ukelele in this group though, which is never something to complain about. ‘Next Time Around’ is a saltwatery pop tune, the type that you’d have to either be crazy or lying about to not enjoy. The music video is exactly as I would describe what a music video for this song would be, and it makes me want to be where they are.

Music Video: Phoenix, 1901

Song: 1901
Artist: Phoenix
Album: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Label:
V2 Records
Notes: 2nd single from LP
Analysis: Phoenix is arguably one of the hottest bands around right now, thanks to some Saturday Night Live exposure and a stellar new album. I love music videos that can play with lighting effects and come out looking better than an over-expensive cgi’ed video would. That’s pretty much what we have here for ‘1901’, Phoenix’ hyper second single. For those who haven’t heard Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix yet, ‘1901’ is a pretty good representation of everything about it; re: it’s really good.

Song: Casa Bey
Artist:
Mos Def
Album: The Ecstatic
Label: Downtown Records
Producer: unknown
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: Unique video here, it’s a close-up shot of Mos’ mouth rhyming, until eventually the screen literally becomes flooded with his words. Not the energized, electric video I was hoping for but the song’s too nice to gripe about.

Music Video: Rick Ross, All I Really Want [ft. The-Dream]

Song: All I Really Want [ft. The-Dream]
Artist: Rick Ross
Album: Deeper Than Rap
Label: Def Jam
Producer: Tricky Stewart
Notes: 2nd single from LP
Analysis: ‘All I Really Want’ is one of the “meh” tracks off of Deeper Than Rap, although not the worst by far (‘Face’, ‘Miami Mami’ & ‘Bossy Lady’ all tie for that accomplishment). But it has it’s drunk-at-the-bar type of benefits, and I can respect and appreciate that. The video is actually surprisingly beautiful, as it was shot on-location in Colombia, not to mention the bikini’d women. ‘All I Really Want’ is a decent R&B track; it’s not going to have a lot of staying power or lasting effect for years to come, but for-the-moment music is the business that Rick Ross thrives in.

Music Video: Busta Rhymes, Respect My Conglomerate [ft. Jadakiss & Lil’ Wayne]

Song: Respect My Conglomerate [ft. Jadakiss & Lil’ Wayne]
Artist: Busta Rhymes
Album: Back on My B.S.
Label: Universal
Producer: Focus
Notes: 3rd single from LP
Analysis: When this song first leaked in the beginning of the year, it featured Young Jeezy rather than Lil’ Wayne, and I pointed out how it was actually one of the few times that I’ve enjoyed one of his verses. Of course, there have been so many changes to Back on My B.S. that I don’t know where the real material starts and the throwaways end. I can’t see this album having any sort of cohesiveness to it, as it’s been fucked with from every possible direction since it’s inception. But at least it will be a good collection of songs, and ‘Respect My Conglomerate’ is one of them. Weezy’s added verse is pretty nice, too (‘hip hop is a bitch and I’m proud of this girl‘). For the video, Busta calls in some favors and gets a few familiar faces in his conglomerate – I see Xzibit, Raekwon, Tyrese, and Idris Elba (The Wire’s Stringer Bell) all chilling at the table. One of these days, the album will actually come out.

Music Video: Eminem, 3am

Song: 3am
Artist: Eminem
Album: Relapse
Label: Shady / Aftermath / Interscope Records
Producer: Dr. Dre
Notes: 2nd single from LP
Analysis: The buzz surrounding Relapse is sort of low, thanks to an awful first single and accompanying video, followed up with a single that’s better lyrically, but too brutal to play on any radio station. Thankfully, the video for ‘3am’ is really good. It’s just as harsh as the song and it plays out like a fast-cut slasher film. I’m still kind of torn about whether I’m upset that this is the same Eminem as ten years ago, or happy about it. I’m still going to need to hear the entire album before I can make a judgement on that.

Music Video: Asher Roth, Be By Myself [ft. Cee-Lo Green]

Song:
Be By Myself [ft. Cee-Lo Green]
Artist: Asher Roth
Album: Asleep in the Bread Aisle
Label: SRC / Universal
Producer: Oren Yoel
Notes: 2nd single from LP
Analysis: So here’s Asher’s first “real” music video, one with a major label-sized budget and actual visual effects. It actually has a pretty swanky 007 opening credits feel to it, and Cee-Lo is one stylish mother fucker ain’t he? The song’s grown on me a bit, and it’s good as a single because it’s party music. But there are a few better tracks on Asleep, and if I had to guess I would say that one of those – ‘La Di Da’ – is next up for the single/music video treatment. For now though, ‘Be By Myself’ is good enough.

Music Video: Raekwon, New Wu [ft. Method Man & Ghostface Killah]

04.30.09

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Song: New Wu [ft. Method Man & Ghostface Killah]
Artist: Raekwon
Album: Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II
Label: Icewater / EMI Records
Producer: unknown
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: Originally leaked earlier this year as ‘Wu Oooh’, ‘New Wu’ now gets the official release under a new name but with the same heavy sound. The video’s pretty low budget, just the guys rapping with some chickenhead hoochies dancing around, and a loosely weaved-in drug storyline. But man, all three of these guys have been on a roll this year with everything they’ve put out or appeared on. There hasn’t been one weak verse between any of them. ‘New Wu’ might be the cream of the ’09 Wu-Tang crop though.
