Song: What’s Crazy [ft. J-Live & Stik Figa]
Artist: Oddisee
Album: Mental Liberation
Label: Mello Music Group
Producer: Oddisee
Notes: none
Analysis: Letting some sample lyrics introduce this post:

Can’t explain why I do what I do.
Sometimes my mind just be groovin’ through a slew
of unkind thoughts,
buried in the dark of my mind.
and sometimes, it blocks the sunshine.

Despite the somber subject matter there, Oddisee’s energy on ‘What’s Crazy’ is what’s crazy. The guy’s got a great vibe behind the mic, and so does featured artist J-Live and even Stik Figa who I’ve never heard of before. Figa spits some pretty nice lyrics himself:

Daddy raised a man, and men – they don’t cry.
Until the wheels fall, believe we gon’ ride.
I’ve been living in the dark, so maybe I won’t die.
Don’t wanna grow up, so baby I’m gon’ fly away.

Not to mention the beat is pretty infectious in an almost early 00’s way (I can’t even explain what that means, it just makes sense to me). If you’re looking for some great underground hip hop, Oddisee, and this track in particular is a pretty good place to start, even more so than his other New Classics-blessed song from back in March.
