Song: Funny the Way It Is
Artist: Dave Matthews Band
Album: Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King
Label: RCA Records
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: Dedicated to and inspired by LeRoi Moore, the band’s saxophonist since their inception who passed away last year, the Dave Matthews Band has an emotional new release to prep for. ‘Funny the Way It Is’ returns the group to their more grounded, outdoorsy festival sound, while still keeping the mood rather somber in the wake of one of their fallen comrades. Parts of it work well, like the violins on the bridge and Dave’s simple but hard-hitting lyrics:

Funny the way it is,
if you think about it.
Somebody’s goin’ hungry and someone else it eating out.
Funny the way it is,
am I right or wrong?
Somebody’s heart is broken and it becomes your favorite song.

Then there’s the out-of-nowhere electric guitar solo that sounds like it belongs on an entirely different song by an entirely different band. But ‘Funny the Way It Is’ is still just a song perfect for a bonfire or just a lazy rainy day like most of their best stuff is. Dave Matthews will always have a huge built-in fanbase, so no matter whether this album is good or bad will make no difference. But if Dave is tapping into new emotions in his songwriting this may be one of, if not THE best DMB record to date.
