Song: We Made You
Artist: Eminem
Album: Relapse
Label: Shady / Aftermath / Interscope
Producer: Dr. Dre
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: Eminem is stuck in a formula. It’s a formula that has worked for him in the past, but I’m not so sure it’s the direction for Relapse to go. It’s pretty much universally agreed upon that Encore was a disappointment, and five years later, it should be time for Eminem to move past the silly voice rapping and unprovoked celebrity bashing. Maybe it was what made him a household name ten years ago, but they aren’t his strongest musical qualities. ‘We Made You’ is his expected formulaic goofy first single, and even compared to his past lead singles, it’s not so good. It seems like Em is rapping twice as fast as he normally does on this song, trying to fit as many syllables into a bar as he can. But the beat doesn’t keep up with him and it comes off sounding off. The content isn’t much better, talking about wanting to bang Lindsay Lohan, Portia de Rossi, Jennifer Anniston & Sarah Palin, among more, but done without any real cleverness or wit. The saving grace of the song, though, is Dr. Dre’s instrumental. His signature keys & bass are still as heavy as ever, and with a better concept it’d be a better song. But the inside of Eminem’s albums are usually where the best stuff is, not the commercial singles. Here’s hoping that if he’s following a formula for his new record, it’s the one from The Eminem Show and not from Encore.

  2. He doesn’t really use that voice in any other song on the album, which makes it much better. His flow is insanely good throughout the album too. It’s much better than Encore.

  3. Yeah, I’ve heard it and it’s grown on me after a few listens but the voice is still there until about the 4th quarter of the album. What bothers me even more than the voice though, is the subject matter like raping and killing Lindsay Lohan or being sodomized by his stepdad. His “look at me, i’m so crazy!” gimmick is really annoying, especially since we already know that he doesnt need to resort to that shit to put out good music. I agree with you on one point though, it is better than Encore.

  5. Eminems big comeback could have been alot better. I think he could have addressed a lot of issues that would have made Relapse a big album. He could have talked about being gone, the changes in his position and his fame, possibly getting fat, and of coarse drugs… I dont know, its not like i could write the album for him, but i wish he tackled all the issues head on like he used to. instead its goofy song after goofy song about rape and pills. I know he had an addiction to pills, and ‘de ja vu’ is a good song about that, but most of it is jokey stuff. Also, the voices (really high pitched, and or with an accent) are just ridiculous. His flow and word play are still great, but they voice makes everything a notch worse than it has to be. My Daring and Careful What You Wish For are the type of stuff i was hoping for, MAYBE, just maybe, Relapse 2 will deliver…
