Song: Friends
Artist: Bishop Lamont
Album: The Reformation
Label: Aftermath / Interscope
Producer: Hi-Tek
Notes: none
Analysis: Very few producers are on Hi-Tek’s level, but when it comes to crafting soulful summer songs, I think he’s in a class all his own. ‘Friends’ is Bishop Lamont’s song, but it’s really Hi-Tek who’s taking Bishop along for the ride. That’s not to say that Lamont isn’t capable of carrying a song, because he can. I’ve heard a lot from the young West Coast MC, but this is the first time that I’m seeing him as a real competition to some of the bigger names out there, and it can’t be a coincidence that it’s also the first time I’m hearing him over a Hi-Tek beat. Bishop raps about some ungrateful friends throughout his life in a much more thought-out way than Jim Jones recently did. Whether you hear this as music for smoking, cruising, chilling out, relaxing or coolin’, just make sure you hear it. It was a huge surprise to me that I’m enjoying this track as much as I am, but I should never underestimate a Hi-Tek credit. Bishop Lamont’s still on the come-up, but Hi-Tek is in a whole other galaxy.
