Song:
Beyond Here Lies Nothin
Artist: Bob Dylan
Album: Together Through Life
Label: Columbia Records
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: Not that I feel qualified to be reviewing music at all, but I definitely don’t feel worthy of putting my two cents in on a new Bob Dylan song. But I’ve made it clear a number of times that the whole point of The New Classics is to give my opinions, and hopefully spark some discussion on the music at hand. Dylan is one of those larger than life musicians to me, and I’m in awe of his extensive catalogue. His upcoming record Together Through Life is his THIRTY-THIRD studio album! The first few notes of ‘Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ reminds me of a bluejeans commercial. Thats one hell of a compliment to bluejeans commercials, but nothing big for Mr. Dylan. When his vocals kick in, they are smokier and more gruff than I know them as. These aren’t the ‘Blowin in the Wind’ Dylan vocals. It’s obvious that this is an older, changed man from that time period. This bluesy ‘Nawlins-flavored piece is nothing what I expected from the man himself, but after a few plays I started to dig it more and more. This is not, nor is it trying to be anything like anything else in modern pop music. It is simply a legend still singing his heart out at 67, and still making wonderful music. ‘Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ shouldn’t be you’re first step into Bob Dylan’s music, but if you’re already a fan of his, of this particular style, or are just looking to expand your own personal music tastes, this is song will be a milestone for you.
