Song: Chillin’ [ft. Lady Gaga]
Artist: Wale
Album: Attention: Deficit
Label: Interscope Records
Producer: Cool & Dre
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: For about two years now, Wale’s official debut has been one of the most anticipated releases in the hip hop community. He’s satisfied curiousities and whet appetites with several increasingly awesome mixtapes and randomly released songs, allowing his buzz to build and his profile to grow. The time has come for Wale to live up to his massive hype, as the album, Attention: Deficit, will supposedly see a summer ’09 release date, and ‘Chillin’ is the official first single for the mainstream. Seeing Lady Gaga’s name as the feature didn’t sit well with me before listening to the song, as I only know her from that obnoxious ‘Just Dance’ song that gets played about six times a night at every bar I go to. Plus, I have had an unmastered version of this song with just Wale for a while, and thought it was just fine the way it was. After listening to this version though, I can see why she was featured: pop accessibility. It’s true that if this were just a Wale solo track, it’d still be pretty popular, but Lady Gaga adds some singalongs that I can just picture the drunken college girls chanting along to back at the bars of my own alma mater. The energy that comes with this track is out of control, and insanely catchy. If ‘Chillin’ isn’t one of the top songs of the summer, I’d be very surprised and there’s something wrong in the world. If the corny Black Eyed Peas can get worldwide radio play, Wale should be getting spins on the moon. Get ready to be sick of this guy, because if everything goes right, ‘Chillin’ is going to be everywhere.
