Song: Throw It in the Bag [ft. The-Dream]
Artist: Fabolous
Album: Loso’s Way
Label: Def Jam
Producer: Tricky Stewart
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: This is a song about going on a shopping spree, something that we all can relate to in the middle of a mother fucking recession, right? My problem with Fabolous is that I really like him as a rapper, and I know he is capable of being really good on the mic, but 90% of his material is commercial R&B garbage like this. And even when he does that, I still like some of it (yeah, ‘Make Me Better’ is still hot, you know it). But here, ‘Throw It in the Bag’ consists of two keys on a piano being played alternately while The-Dream sings the title, and Fabolous kicks a few simplistic verses about being rich. That sounds like a formula for a Soulja Boy or Bow Wow song, not for someone as talented as Fabo is, especially when he’s following up his best album ever, 2007’s From Nothin’ to Somethin’. It’s frustrating to see him hold himself back, but he’s a smart guy and he knows that this track is going to sell his records to the people who still actually buy records these days. They’re the same people who watch 106 & Park, and thats exactly where this song will be calling home for months once a video hits.
