New Music: Ghostface Killah & DOOM, Chinatown Wars

Song: Chinatown Wars
Artist: Ghostface Killah & DOOM
Album: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Label: none
Producer: DOOM Oh No
Notes: taken from the Grand Theft Auto game for Nintendo DS
Analysis: I’m never mad at new Ghostface. On ‘Chinatown Wars’, he collaborates with DOOM (formerly MF Doom), a producer who knows how to create awesome music for Ghost to rhyme over*. When these two get together, they create some really great music (check out ‘Jellyfish’, ‘Guns N Razors’, and one of my favorite Ghostface Killah songs ever: ‘Alex (Stolen Script)’). DOOM puts in some vocals as well on this track, spitting his trademark off-beat free association rhymes over his own Chinese-inspired beat. But it’s Ghostface’s delivery that makes the song work as well as it does; always energetic, and using vivid imagery better than almost any other rapper out there. This is some refreshing shit that I can’t wait to plug into next time I take a drive.

*EDIT: It was brought to my attention today that Oh No is actually the producer behind these two tracks, not DOOM himself. Apologies and props to Oh No. You should still check out those three MF Doom produced Ghostface songs that I mentioned, though.

  1. agreed, except Oh No produced those tracks (with the entire project for Chinatown Wars’ music headed up by Alchemist). I licensed the Chinese music samples to Rockstar Games for the songs.

  2. Damn, you know, I read that before that it was actually Oh No who produced these and I forgot to come back and change it. Thanks for calling me out on that, credit’s always gotta go to the right person. I love the samples man, thanks for checking out the site.
