Song: Panic Switch
Artist: Silversun Pickups
Album: Swoon
Label: Dangerbird Records
Notes: 1st single from LP
Analysis: Three years ago, the Pickups blew me away with a fantastic song called ‘Lazy Eye’, which has since gone on to be raped by Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour. But it’s still a great song, and unfortunately I didn’t find the rest of the group’s debut album Carnavas to be anywhere near as good as theit breakout single. It’s easy to write them off as a one-hit wonder, but ‘Panic Switch’ is the band showing everyone that they’re more than that. Layered in texture and late night ambiance, lead singer Brian Aubert sings (If I go anywhere that you want me to go / How do I know you’ll still follow?) in a quieter Perry Farrell-like singing voice. But the frazzled guitar melodies are the best part of the song, reminding me of some of the Pixies’ best stuff. I’m not the biggest supporter of commercialization, but if ‘Panic Switch’ doesn’t end up in the next Rock Band game, it’s a disservice, because this song is ALMOST every bit as good as ‘Lazy Eye’.
