New Music: Method Man & Redman, A Yo

Song: A Yo
Artist: Method Man & Redman
Album: unknown
Label: Def Jam Records
Producer: Pete Rock
Notes: none
Analysis: I was going to wait until I had more details before posting this track, but I got too excited. 1999’s Blackout! is one of my favorite hip hop LPs ever created, and it’s been too long since these two have contributed to a track together. Blackout! 2 has been long rumored, but it’s been ten years now since the original record dropped, so I don’t know if this is just a one-off track or the beginning of something new. Meth has sort of fallen off lyrically over the past few years, unless seriously motivated (see recently: ‘Wu Ooh’ by Raekwon), and Red has just plain disappeared from the game, besides poking his head back in for a minute with 2007’s Red Gone Wild. But both MC’s are timeless to me, especially when they ride together on warm weather music like this, and they seem to bring out the best in eachother. I am thrilled that these guys are back to making music together, and am pulling for them to crank out an album for the summertime.

  2. Well, yeah. What was the last Method Man solo song you really liked? He isn’t the same as he was back when Tical first dropped, or the 36 Chambers days. He’s lost some edge to his rhymes that I think got washed out when he started doing movies and tv shows. I don’t think you can argue with that. Tical 0: The Prequel was trash. 4:21 The Day After was definitely better, but still not up to his own legandary standards.

I also said that he still has it when he’s motivated. Going back and forth with other Wu members or Redman seem to bring out the best in him. I thought he was great on 8 Diagrams. And I love Meth, but it feels like he’s penned some lazy verses for a few years now.
