Song: I’m Confused
Artist: Handsome Furs
Album: Face Control
Label: Sub Pop Records
Notes: none
Analysis: ‘I’m Confused’ is one of those songs that you are going to enjoy more with each listen. Here, Handsome Furs have created the first infectious indie pop tune of 2009. The influence of the song (and possibly the band – I have yet to hear much else from them) obviously comes from 80’s new wave; New Order initially comes to mind. Very danceable and cheerful, and I’m really loving that guitar riff after every “I’m confused” in the chorus. (I  hope this life don’t get you down / a dirty old time in a dirty old town / and if you’re feeling destructive, / there’s something to do / sometimes we get confused) are a sample of singer Dan Boeckner’s lyrics that invoke a simple imagery open to interpretation. But without getting too deep, the song is just plain ol’ poppy fun, and did the trick in getting me interested in yet another album release this year.
