Song: Quiet Dog
Artist: Mos Def
Album: The Ecstatic
Label: Downtown Records
Producer: Preservation
Notes: 2nd single from LP
Analysis:And I’m much more stronger now” is how the audio clip at the beginning of the song ends, before the music kicks in. Mos Def returns to hip hop this year after taking a little side track through Hollywood, and with ‘Quiet Dog’ he hasn’t missed a step. The song’s jungle drums keeps a steady beat while Mos gets busy: (Movin’ on the bass, it’s a stimulant / standin’ in the twilight, I’m watchin’ ’em get it in / the walls are tremblin’ / the air is simmerin’ / movin’ like more than the ears are listenin’). But it isn’t what he says, it’s how he says it that I like about this one. The rhyming stays constant throughout the song, and it feels like Mos barely comes up for a breath while he bobs and weaves around Preservation’s beat with his wordplay, even while mumbling a word or two here and there. I was a little disappointed by Mos Def’s last two albums as a whole, and I am pulling for a new classic in The Ecstatic.
