New Music: Black Lips, Starting Over

Song: Starting Over
Artist: Black Lips
Album: 200 Million Thousand
Label: Vice Records
Notes: none
Analysis: Finally, a song with real guitars to begin 2009. The melody of ‘Starting Over’ is almost like a Beach Boys tune in slow motion, and the muffled vocals of lead singer Cole Alexander sound like they were recorded underwater. Neither of those are particularly bad things, though, as the song works quite well. From what I can gather, it is about recovering from the end of a relationship, and the feelings (I think I’m going to drink some more beer / and I’ll blow out my mind) surrounding us when that sort of thing happens. I am not Black Lips’ biggest flag waver, but ‘Starting Over’ gets my seal of approval.
