Song: Up in the Club [ft. Lil Wayne]
Artist: Swizz Beatz
Album: Remember Hip Hop
Label: Universal Motown
Producer: Swizz Beatz
Notes:
Analysis: Only four days into 2009, and we have our second Lil Wayne featured song. This one is a Caribbean-tinged party song dropped by producer-turned-rapper, Swizz Beatz. Swizz has a tendency to try to fit as many words into a line as he can to try to make sense of his rhymes, and he just comes across as amateurish. It also doesn’t help that he drops some of the corniest raps I have ever heard (Something like a phenomenon / the steering wheel cost a mil that my arm is on / I don’t tell no time so my time is wrong). He’s really stretching it there. Thankfully, the beat is so good that you can hopefully tune out whatever Swizzy says. And if you ever wanted to hear Lil Wayne rhyme over xylophones (mercifully with minimum autotune), he graces the track with a quick and dirty verse that he probably kicked out in 5 minutes to cash Swizzy’s check. I wish Swizz Beatz saved this beat for someone other than himself (Busta would sound tight on here), but hopefully there is a posse remix on the way to help me forget about Swizz’ poor rap skills. Great party song, awful rap song.
