No artwork for this month’s tape, at least not yet. My time’s been real limited lately, but I managed to whip up a new Mixtape for whoever would like it. A few artists appear twice this go-round, but everything’s (2) legit + quality shit. This tape is also special because it features several tracks that haven’t even been reviewed yet here at The New Classics. Trust me when I say that this is the best mixtape so far from the site. Best 20 songs released in the month of March in the year of Two Thousand and Nine, in no particular order besides a transitional one:

Album Review: Handsome Furs, Face Control

It takes something really special for me to really latch onto newer bands lately. It does happen: Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver & Frightened Rabbit have all become favorites of mine within the past year, all putting out superb albums in 2008. And then there are the groups who put out a song or two that I really like, but the rest of the material doesn’t connect with me for whatever reason. Blitzen Trapper, Black Lips and Grizzly Bear, to name recent examples, all fall into that category for me. Those are bands that I will probably follow for as long as they continue to put out music, but I don’t feel any obligation to own everything that they create.
I don’t really know what I expected from Face Control, but I was anticipating this release based on the strength of ‘I’m Confused‘, the first (and at the time only) song I’d ever heard from the group.

Analysis: Back in January, this song came out of nowhere for me. I had only kind of passingly heard of the Handsome Furs, but hadn’t heard any of their music before. I said it got me interested in another album this year, and I just picked up Face Control this week. I haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet, but I am hoping to put up a review of it sometime soon (along with a handful of other releases that I’ve been meaning to get to). The video’s kind of cool. It’s got a hipster band performing for hipster college kids, which eventually turns into seizures and zombies and spitting oil into eachothers mouths. I’m confused. But add another layer on to my love for this song.
